  • Zanzibar’s only national park is Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park, which protects the largest remaining coastal forest on the island. This forest is the habitat of several rare and endemic species, such as the Zanzibar red colobus monkey, the Zanzibar servaline genet, the tree hyrax and the elephant shrew.

  • Zanzibar also has other forest reserves, such as Ngezi Forest Reserve on Pemba Island, which is home to the Pemba flying fox, a large fruit bat with a wingspan of up to 1.5 meters. Other wildlife in Pemba include the Pemba scops owl, the Pemba green pigeon and the Pemba sunbird .

  • Zanzibar’s most elusive and mysterious animal is the Zanzibar leopard, a subspecies of leopard that may be extinct or very rare. It is believed to have evolved after Zanzibar became separated from the mainland by rising sea levels. The last confirmed sighting was in 2003, but some locals claim to have seen it more recently
